I'm still here, once a week unless there's announcements. This activity doesn't move fast enough. The information people want is hidden in terms of why rides are broken and when they expect them to be fixed. Same thing for park attendance. They'll give the over all number and how much the company is making, but not the attendance at each park.

Who exactly do you think is hiding anything? Just curious.

You do understand that this is not a moderated newsgroup, right?
No one can actually cancel anyone else's posts.

I haven't been reading as often specifically because the newsreader I liked
got broken by an OS update and I haven't been able to find a replacement that
feels right. So I just don't check my newsgroups like I used to. But I still
do like to check in now and then, especially because I like the
closures/announcements threads.

I check in every week or two.

I miss the heydays of RRC in the late 90s/early 00s.

ACE still felt relevant. Robb Alvey was still a respected participant of RRC and we bought his VHS tapes. RRC-specific memes like "Millennium is spelled with two n's ;-)" and "BOOTLEGGED CHEESEBURGER!". We had two gatherings at Silverwood with ERT on Timber Terror and Tremors.

Somewhere in a box, I still have those tapes, along with a rec.roller-coaster button, a bunch of park t-shirts given to me by RunawayMT, and a piece of wood and a chain dog from Timber Terror.

I miss the heyday in the late 90s as well. Though I didn't get to many of the large meetups that seemed to happen I was pretty active on the weekly IRC chat for a while. Still have my old VHS tapes that RunawayMT and Shawn F. made (Coastered! and Coastered! '99, respectively) though I no longer have a way to play them - to this day when I hear "Good Vibrations" I think "Hey! It's the Kennywood song!". Found my old RRC buttons a while back which brought back some memories.

Were you aware that Mark McKenzie's original "Coastered" has made its way
(officially!) to YouTube?

Hmmm...I don't think I can browse YouTube on this computer so I'm not sure
if I can get a URL...

Here it is!

Had to look that one up. Seems it was about Racer 75? They suggested tearing - sorry, "taering" one side down to build a Superman Escape From Krypton kind of ride.

I should start using that phrase myself.

Actually, I believe that the discussion was about the long-gone Hercules wooden coaster at Dorney Park. That ride never ran right, and was always being altered. There was a constructive discussion about what needed to be done to the ride, when someone tossed "Taer it down" into the mix. From that point it became a thing for a while on RRC to say "Taer it down" as a knee jerk reaction to news about any coaster.
This is going back nearly 20 years, but I think I've got the broad strokes right. Would be glad to other recollections!

I thought someone who said they should replace Leap the Dips with a B&M steel coaster of some sort was the one who said “taer it down” (about Leap The Dips)?

I do.

As for actual coastering, haven't done much since taking a huge
pay cut career-wise in recent years, and, since the present fee just to
park at some major amusement chains either equals or exceeds
the price of adult day admission of twenty years ago... !

I’ve cut back a lot too. Price is a big factor especially since a lot of the newer rides and offerings just aren’t as good as they used to be, plus cut the line passes existing makes the experience for the rest of us worse than it used to be.

Still out here. Gotta justify the $2.95/month I pay Forte Agent for
the limited version news service. :-) We've been traveling a lot
since summer and I realized I hadn't checked in for several months so
I just saw this thread. We very rarely go to parks or ride coasters
these days and this isn't exactly the place to go for general
conversation, so I guess I only check out r.r-c. for old time's sake.
Hi to all of you who have hung on for 20-some years or parts thereof.
PPP may be on the schedule for Oct 2019.

Dana (who promises to visit GTitS if it every opens again under any
format, coaster or amusement rides or not, since it would be my
current "home park"; I'm not too optimistic about that happening in my
lifetime)

Great to hear from you Dana! I have seen Dooley and Joe on occasion, been a while. We don't travel to parks as much, with 3 kids one coaster trip costs us a fortune. Heading to Eastcoaster Fri-Sun with daughter Katie, she loves EastCoaster. Lots of great memories back at the Days Inn and the Northampton Communtiy Center! Hope to see at least a few RRCr's, or ex-RRCr's this weekend. I really miss the Camp RRC, and all the old faces at PPP every year.

It was one of those "Golden Era" things that you look back on fondly and which seem to end so quickly.

Define "regularly"...

I don't make it here nearly as often as I once did (now THERE is an
understatement!) but I do make a point of dropping in from time to time and
catching up.

I really miss r.r-c being the most widely read clearinghouse of online
amusement ride discussion. Now between hundreds of web forums and thousands
of Failbook groups, there is no one place where you can engage with a broad
cross-section of the community. The Failbook groups are probably the worst
because they all look exactly the same and have many of the same people in
them, so if you have a conversation about some topic you can never remember
which group it was and with which small chunk of the population.

I remember Joe Schwartz's justification for voting *against* the creation
of rec.parks.theme...and quite frankly, he was exactly right.
rec.parks.theme didn't really do much damage, but a hundred web sites all
trying to drive unique content certainly did.
