Just saw something about this on Good Morning America. Some girl was being interviewed. A rider or riders fell 30 feet and the train derailed and was hanging from the track. They said it happened last Thursday.

Yeah, it was all over the news in central Florida.

I’ve ridden that coaster about 2 years ago. Also rode it when it was at Bland’s park back in 1999. The ride was apparently originally built in 1975. I heard a news story today on the way to work saying it had recently passed a state inspection.

A couple articles stated that the state inspectors were there earlier THAT DAY, but most articles focused on a failed inspection over a year ago. Tho one of those listed the failure points and they were mostly loose handrails and such...

This has to be a failure of either the wheel assemblies or the track and I could believe either one. Especially on a coaster that operated in New England and then moved to FL Atlantic coast... stress, corrosion, metal fatigue...

It’ll be interesting to find out what is determined that the cause was. I also wonder if they will attempt to repair and reopen the ride, try to sell it, or if the ride will be scrapped.

When I was there in 2014, that whole area of attractions didn't even look to be operating even though they were. It could've gotten better since but it was very rough looking.

That’s what I thought too from a distance when we were on the beach and then went to eat at Joe’s Crab Shack. But then finally saw the coaster go and went over there. The park closed and then reopened months later under new ownership last year. The new owners did make noticeable astheric improvements.

Eventually the investigation will be closed, and the ride will end up in
South America, that seems to be the usual fate for these things.

That is, if the investigators ever actually find anything. Based solely on
what I am reading in these reports, the credibility of the investigators
has started very close to zero and is dropping fast. Have these engineers
ever seen a roller coaster before? Do they have any idea at all how the
thing works? The conclusion is idiotic, and from the description in the
most recent story it sounds like the idea of a "gravity driven device" is a
foreign concept.

Not sure if the word made it over here, but the official word from the
preliminary investigation was that the ride was running too fast because of
some operator error. I'm not exactly convinced.

It looks like the coaster was removed fairly recently.

Be a shame to lose it. That leaves only one Z64 in all of the US. While obviously limited to the basic Zyklon/Galaxi format, the Z64 offered larger drops and substantial airtime in the back car (which is the other thing - these run 3 car trains and not single cars.)
