Made the trip to the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area 2 weeks ago for the Smoky Mountain Coasterfest. Only my second visit to the area (June 2008 was my other). Arrived Thursday the 17 late afternoon, and stayed in Gatlinburg. First night, we did the Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster and Space Needle. My first alpine coaster, glad I finally got to experience this. It was just about dark, no wait. ACE discount is $12 as opposed to $16. I was kinda nervous but excited, had a lot of fun. Operators told us to leave the brake open the entire time. Also did the Space Needle, great views up there, place was empty. With a ticket we could go a second visit within 24 hours if we wanted. Not sure if that's an off season thing or a usual offer they have. They also have a decent size arcade. We ate at a pizza place near the Ober Gatlinburg transportation station. Food was a decent.

Second day, started at Ober. Transportation up was cool, with the changing leaves, not too busy. Park was nice, no waits. Did the chairlift. They had live music at the top, great views. Very long ride. Also did their alpine coaster, was good, no shoulder strap on this one. Ride looked brand new. I did their alpine slide as well. My first time on one of these, very fun as well, but enjoyed the alpine coasters better.
We then went to Pigeon Forge, ate at Pottery House Cafe. Food was excellent, I ordered the lunch salmon special. Also visited the Island. It reminds me of the I-360 complex in Orlando. Rode the observation wheel, was very nice, they accept coupons by showing them on your phone. They also have RDC bumper cars, but didn't get to ride them. Had an ice cream there. Did the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster, apparently this is the longest one. $8 with an ACE card. Then the Goats On the Roof Coaster, also $8 with an ACE card. This place actually has goats and some of them are on a roof. Very interesting place, you can feed the goats, too. After riding 4 alpine coasters in 2 days after never riding any, I found them all to be equally as fun. Also finally tried the Jurassic Boat Ride. Regretted not trying this one after my 2008 visit, very interesting ride. Decent, but odd, especially the ride system. Glad I got to try it. Finished the night at Circus Golf & mirror maze. Very good golf course, and fun mirror maze with loud music. Definitely worth it.

Saturday was Dollywood day. Arrived early for ERT and breakfast. Pastries, muffins, water, coffee and cocoa were provided. ERT was on Blazing Dury, with lights on for the second half hour. Got 5 rides in. Then went to Lightning Rod when the park opened. This coaster has some of the slowest operations I've ever seen. They also don't allow choice of seat, and I was stuck with my least desired row. Wasn't too impressed after the first ride. Rode Mystery Mine which is still fun. Then tried Firechaser and Wild Eagle for the first time. Firechaser was decent, apparently many effects were not working, but still enjoyed it. Wild Eagle was excellent, only my second B&M wing coaster (Thunderbird my first). I have to say, I enjoy the wing coasters much more than I expected to. We then saw the Smoky Mountain Christmas show, which was good, but was kind of all over the place. We had a brief q&a with park representative and also a group photo done. Then ate at Miss Lillian's Chicken which was superb and at a great price. We then went to Lightning Rod for a photo tour in back areas. Split into 2 groups, the better photo opportunities were in the second round (for my group). Took us up on the hill which we couldn't see much, then back behind the track for some better photos. Lasted a bit too long. We then saw the It's a Wonderful Life show, this one was excellent. At this point, we waited for the parade in the reserved area with complimentary food and drinks for the event. Parade was nice. Then went over to Thunderhead, got 2 amazing dark rides on this. ERT was about to start this point, ended up with 4 very cold rides on Lightning Rod. Choice of seat was only allowed later in the ERT when the lineup for the next train only had a few riders, and had to be an empty row (during ERT). Ride is also very dark at night, enjoyed it a lot more. Only my second RMC, I enjoyed it a lot more than Wicked Cyclone. An interesting note- Dollywood doesn't allow re-rides at all, not even during ERT. (Neither Blazing Fury nor Lighting Rod.)

All in all, a nice visit to the area.

Forgot to mention we visited Mysterious Mansion the second night. This haunted house was pretty good, it's a little different than most that I've been to, you kinda have to figure out which way to go in each room, like there might be 5 doors but only one is real. Had a lot of fun in it.

Great TR.

What I took away from your TR, was the over all experience of LR. It depends on the line, and where you are seated. I've noticed this on my travels to visit all RMCs, which is why I factor that into my reviews. It could depend on when you visit during the day, but in general, if they assign seats and only have one train running, that sucks.

New Texas Giant (SFoT) - Rode in Front and Back, was able to pick my seat.
Twisted Colossus (SFMM) - Rode twice in 2nd row from back. You pick seat.
Goliath (SFGAm) - Rode a couple times near the back, short ride. They assign.
Iron Rattler (SFFT) - Rode in front, back, You pick seat.
Outlaw Run (SDC) - Rode anywhere, short lines, great ride, you pick.
Lightning Rod (DW) - Rode 4 times, 3 in back, 1 near front, they assign.
Storm Chaser (KK) - Rode many times when the park opened, like ERT, you pick.
The Joker (SFDK) - Rode twice, then long lines, they assign.
Wicked Cyclone (SFNE) - Rode Twice at night, they assign.

I factor in the seat assignment, number of trains, and over all experience into my rankings. And I'm not vising with a coaster club, it's any day, you never know when I'll show up.

How are the jump scares in this? Lots, none?

They pulse everyone in groups. It was my girlfriend and myself and one other large group of 4 or 5. I think there was another group of 2 as well. Once we started, the rest of the group as a whole got far ahead of us at one point pretty quickly and the sole scareactor who should've followed us as a group ended up (probably unknowingly) with the big group. So my girlfriend and I walked through at least half of the house with zero scares. Once the big group exited, the scareactor concentrated on us and got some pretty good scares for the remainder of the experience. I would recommend doing this one and would like to eventually do it again.

We also went to the event, 5 us in our family. We had a blast, but it was VERY cold at night at Dollywood. Overall we had a great day, love Dollywood one of my favorite theme parks in the USA. We did the Alpine Coaster in Pigeon Forge, did GoTR coaster last year. I liked GoTR better, but I think the one down the street was a bit more thrilling. Overall a great weekend.

The 4 I rode were all pretty equally good. The coaster at goats on the roof was the most unique just because of the goat aspect of the property. The one at Ober would take the longest to do unless you’re doing the rest of the park since it’s the furthest, even if you take the skyride up.

Was this the "goats of the roof" in north GA?

I noted 2 that were close to where I will be staying over closer to Pigeon Forge. One was a Goats on the Roof that looked like it might not be open or possibly even be completed and the other (Just down the road) was lit up in "ranbow-like" colors at night. It was rainy when I passed through a few nights ago and I will be in the area again next Friday.

From best to worst:

Anakeesta
Smoky Mountain Mountain Coaster
Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster
Rocky Top Mountain Coaster
Goats On the Roof
Rowdy Bear
Ober Gatlinburg

Some might argue for Rocky Top because it is long - it has four separate sections with lift hills - but Smokey Mountain is an altogether longer circuit all in one shot and uses older Wiegland cars IIRC that don't automatically brake nearly as much. Ober's ride is possibly the worst mountain coaster in the entire world. I would say that any of the top 5 is actively decent with Anakeesta's being actually scary, but you can easily do the middle rides on a per diem basis given their more convenient locations. Rocky Top is right on the way back to the parkway from Dollywood; Smokey Mountain and Goats on The Roof are probably less than a mile from each other on Wears Valley Rd.

Unless something changed in the last year, Ober's was one of the better ones.
Havent done Anakeestas,
but I agree that Smoky Mountain is the best of the rest.
Rocky Top may be long but the multiple mid-course lifts ruin the ride.
Rowdy Bears is too short to be in the competition unless you also ride the flyer.

I rode the 4 that existed then in late 2016. I didn’t find Ober’s to be much different than any of the other 3, other than the fact that the trains on that one had a shoulder strap while the others I don’t think did. I remember the restraints/trains being not quite as good and slightly more restrictive than the others.
I’d recommend doing at least one of them at night if possible, as the experience is much different than in the daytime. We did 2 in the day and 2 in the dark if I recall correctly.

I think the place I am staying is near Wears Valley road because I passed 2 (1 being Goats on the Roof) when I passed through last Friday. So, perhaps I can do Smokey Mountain and Goats if they are both open. The one mentioned as "scary" sounds appealing. I have only ridden one mountain coaster (Wisp in Maryland) and I found it to be excellent.
