The 2018 thread is here.
https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!topic/rec.roller-coaster/fx92IyxDppk

We already have two announcements for 2019.

The Steel Curtain - Kennywood
and
Reese's Cupfusion - Hershey Park

Screamscape is reporting that Hershey may add a new coaster in 2020.
Since Hershey is still in the top 20 for attendance, here is their history going back to 2006.
2006 - 2,690,000 (-0.4%)
2007 - 2,940,000 (+9.2%) (Boardwalk, Water Attractions)
2008 - 2,840,000 (-4.4%) (Fahrenheit)
2009 - 2,807,000 (-1.2%) (Boardwalk Seaquell, Water Attractions)
2010 - 2,891,000 (+3.0%)
2011 - 2,949,000 (+2.0%)
2012 - 3,140,000 (+6.5%) (Skyrush)
2013 - 3,180,000 (+1.3%) (Boardwalk Expansion)
2014 - 3,212,000 (+1.0%) (Cocoa Cruiser)
2015 - 3,276,000 (+2.0%) (Laff Trakk)
2016 - 3,276,000 (+0.0%) (Hershey Water Works at Hershey Lodge)
2017 - 3,301,000 (+0.8%) (Triple Tower)
2018 - (Breakers Edge, Whitecap Racers)
2019 - (Reese's Cupfusion)
Dropped behind SFMM for 2016, stayed in the same spot for 2017.

2020 will be interesting to see what Hershey does with the golf course land.

I'll be updating my attendance page here as the announcements happen.

Looks good, the 2nd half of the ride is nothing after that block brake. It's almost like the ending of Gatekeeper. Seems like they could of raised the track and done more with the ending, but it's already a record breaker.

Waldameer Park - Chaos (Zamperla Discovery Revolution)
They actually announced this back in March.

Worlds of Fun - Boathouse Grill

Are you kidding me? First it was Dorney Park announcing a restaurant, now WOF. Fine, they can get away with "announcing" something that should be considered general improvements, but it doesn't matter to coaster fans. What's next? Announcing water fountains? Oh, Cedar Point did just that a few years ago. That was fine because it was an "off" year, but for the step child parks, this is pathetic. Once all the announcements are done, the over all body of work will be looked at and compared to SF.

Interesting. If that picture is accurate then it's Birds' machine, which is surprising. I will find out.

Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island - Cedar Point

I'm looking overhead at the google map. I think they can do more with the island than a single attraction, unless they want to move the antique cars here like they're doing with KI. If this is an upcharge, then forget it.

I suspect that what they are doing is probably a collection of
"attractions" set out to make use of a large space on the island. The park
has already stated that whatever it is will not be an upcharge.

I don't know what they are doing. But if I had to guess, it's a collection
of elements that basically amount to an all-ages playground. Perhaps the
sort to which a variety of more conventional rides might be added in the
future.

My vision, based on the extremely limited information that has been given
so far, is for something like a cross between Tom Sawyer's Island (but
without the rafts) and the Jurassic Playground (minus the Pteranadon
Flyers).

I guess next Summer we'll find out if I even got close.

Youtube video for the BGW announcement is here.

Now we're waiting on BGT.

And we're still waiting on the rest of the announcements from CF. It's very interesting to look at my page here
http://www.nogodforme.com/USA_Park_Coaster_Attendance_Results.htm
Where I break down SF vs. CF since 2017. Honestly, SF hasn't done much in the way of coasters.

In 2017, SF had an off year with no coaster. 2018 was only Twisted Cyclone at SFoG along with WWGLC at SFFT. 2019 has them with West Coast Racers and Maxx Force (which is very short). The rest are carnival coasters and a conversion. CF has done better with more coasters but I'm not holding my breath on the rest of their announcements. This one ride a year thing is getting old. As one person said, the parks have matured.

Besides CP with Steel Vengeance, most parks are putting in short foot print coasters, carnival rides, and Mack Coasters now seem to be in flavor.

I'm looking at my page and there really isn't much going on. I guess everyone is waiting for 2020.

I think the parks are generally making smarter decisions. Coasters are fewer but usually better and more thought out. Smaller coasters are filling in space. More flat rides and more importantly, more dark rides. I’m glad Six Flags especially has been thinking outside the box with their above average dark rides, some unique flat rides (some which are better than others but they’re taking hose chances), the redo of the Safari at Great Adventure. I would like to see more wood coasters though, and more shows pretty much everywhere. I’m at the point where I look forward to a lot of the shows as much or more than the rides at a lot of places, and that’s a bigger driving factor for me to visit than it was, especially now that I’ve ridden almost rides that are cloned everywhere. At least the shows are typically completely unique in addition to whatever unique rides a park happens to have. I like a good balance.

Eh, most of the newer flat rides are puke machines. Solely designed to severely disorient the rider. Bring back the rock-o-planes, scooters and teacups like rides that let the riders determine how extreme they want it.
Make improvements in design and comfort, like the new open seat Enterprise type rides, but quit with the seven-axis, variable speed, 1000000 bulb monstrosities.

Why “Coaster”?
It's not a coaster, but a flat ride. Not listed on the RCDB page, more like a Larson Looper except sideways. There's nothing to these rides. Won't make the GTA list, won't be in any travel magazines on the airplanes, won't have any hype when it opens. I know the Sea World parks have height restrictions, but this is a complete waste of a ride, similar to Kentucky Kingdom installing a Larson Looper.

In other news, Screamscape announced Holiday World's new office building next to Getaway Gobbler. Maybe HW will say something in a month as they usually announce later in the year.

Still waiting on a few Cedar Fair parks to announce.
Kings Dominion - ???
Dorney Park - ???
California's Great America - ???
Knott's Berry Farm - ???
Valley Fair - ???
Michigan's Adventure - ???

You see, this is more proof the chain only cares about the marquee parks. Cedar Fair announced for Cedar Point, Carowinds, and Kings Island at the same time Six Flags made their announcements. Yet there's been nothing for the other parks, except for Canada's Wonderland. Not much construction at these parks either. If I don't hear anything soon, I'll mark down that each one is getting a park bench. Giant swing rides are cool, but the Skywarp and Sky Rocket II stuff, no.

Holiday World - Santa's Merry Marketplace

This appears to be a revamp of Kringle's restaurant at the front of the park. Everything Lauren Crosby mentioned in the video is already there, so I don't get it. When I passed by this restaurant on previous visits, it wasn't exactly packed. To me, people passing by are either entering the park heading to rides, or leaving (where they'll go visit some place else). The only thing in favor of HW is that there aren't many fast food places near by.

It basically gives them a reason to put up a bunch of signs that say "New" all over the building, and it will probably have a clean fresh look, which will draw people in.

They're also building a new office next to Gobbler Getaway. It was funny because Screamscape mentioned the building, and HW responded by saying that Screamscape just announced their new office building.

Now we're only waiting on the rest of the Cedar Fair parks I mentioned, plus the smaller parks.

Right, it's the length of a drag strip, or 1 lap on an American running track. That's the best way to think about it, 440 yards.

What gets me is the placement of this ride. It's not anywhere near the kid area. It's going to be in the far back of the park, about the farthest away from the entrance they can get.

BGT did this with their kid area (Jungala), and it flopped. Why? Because parents are not going to drag their kids that far. They may visit once, but not over and over when they have to walk so far.

BGT did this with their kid area (Jungala), and it flopped. Why? Because parents are not going to drag their kids that far. They may visit once, but not over and over when they have to walk so far.
But it *is* near where the ride used to be. And it's near where the Dinosaurs Alive attraction was located. Probably closer to the kids area than the Dinosaurs were. So yes, parents will be bringing their kids all the way over to ride it. It's near Windseeker, so the park is probably betting that a lot of families will head that way and while the bigger kids ride Windseeker, the smaller ones can ride the "new" auto ride.

And when the news organizations say "quarter mile" long, it's likely that it will be longer. That was probably just a marketing term used by the park. My bet is that it will end up more like 1/3 mile, but "third of a mile" doesn't sound as nice and neat as "quarter mile".

Not to mention that everybody knows that 4 > 3 therefore a quarter mile is
obviously longer than 1/3 mile.

Or so it would seem. At least that's true for hamburgers: people don't
intuitively understand that 1/3 pound burgers are BIGGER than 1/4 pound
burgers. But somehow they DO understand that the 1/2 pounders are bigger
than the halves and thirds.

Go figure.

First of all, this isn't a kiddie ride. This is an all-ages ride squarely
aimed at whole families in an area of the park where most of the rides do
accommodate at least the bigger kiddies. This is in spitting distance of
the Scrambler and Troika, both of which have reduced "with Supervising
Companion" height requirements and not too far removed from the Carousel
and Tower (both all-ages rides). Coney Mall is absolutely the right place
for this ride, as Coney...with the game joints and flat rides, even
surrounded by major coasters...is a major hang-out area for families that
have escaped the kiddie ghetto.

Second, the ride was originally in Coney, on the site now occupied by the
Stunt Coaster or whatever they call it now. If they really want to fix up
the mess that Paramount left them, they should get a 10-car park model
Bish-Rocco Flying Scooter and put it up on the platform where Flight
Commander used to be. I know Carowinds has one that they're not using right
now; when they are ready to bring it back they can have Kings Island's
Larson version from over in Planet Snoopy.

Speaking of Planet Snoopy, if you are concerned about proximity to the
kiddie ghetto, remember this is Kings Island. It's different from all those
other 1970's theme parks: it's not built in a loop. All the sections of the
park are interconnected, and even far-flung sections of the park (say, from
Antique Cars back to the little kiddie cars over by the Coaster Known But
Not Named Beastie) are really not that far apart. Unless, of course, you
are at the front end of Festhaus and want to get to Graeter's. Why isn't
there a bridge over that damn fountain?!

Antique Cars at Kings Island are just another installment in trying to fix
some of the damage that Paramount did to that park. They took care of the
big omissions (Diamondback and Banshee), now they are working on the
stuff that should never have been pulled out. Bringing back the antique
autos to Kings Island is in many ways a lot like bringing the singing
mushrooms back to Kings Dominion.

I guess nobody's mentioned Star Wars Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in Anaheim and Disney Hollywood Studios in Florida, so there you go. Mid-2019, no specific date announced though the Disneyland version is supposedly opening first.

At Disneyland SWGE took over all the land in Frontierland north of Big Thunder Trail (which runs between BTMRR and Fantasyland), including backstage areas, and they shortened the north end of the Rivers of America for even more land. The train was also rerouted. There will be a path from Critter Country to SWGE so there will now be a walking route completely around the Rivers of America.

American Dream (mall next to the Meadowlands in New Jersey with a park with coasters inside) opening spring 2019.
Six Flags Leaks
SFMM - West Coast Racers (Premier Quad Launch)
SFNJ - Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth (Giant Pendulum)
SFGAm - Maxx Force (S&S Air Launch)
SFFT - The Joker Wild Card (Giant Pendulum)

SF doing a great job with the names again.

Maxx Force looks like Tempesto with a little more at the end. It's only an out and back one time. The video makes the ride look long, but it's not.

West Coast Racers looks like Stunt Coaster + Twisted Colossus. Seems more like a family thrill ride.

Giant Pendulum rides are good, much better than the Larson Loopers that should be removed everywhere to save on maintenance and staff cost.

"Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to Open May 31 at Disneyland Resort, August 29 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios"

Disneylands's May 31 opening is "phase one" with the land and "Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run" open on that day and "phase two" with the trackless "Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance" to open "later this year."

Reservations (no extra cost) or a hotel reservation will be required to enter the land until late June.

It's unclear whether the phased opening is unique to Disneyland or for both parks, but Florida's version will not require reservations.

Anybody else thinking that someone should tell Universal that West Coast Racers is what Fast and Furious should have been?
The full SF announcement is here.

My updated page now shows this.

Let's look at SF V. CF for 2019 and the last major coaster (not carnival or kiddie).
Six Flags
SFMM - West Coast Racers (Premier Quad Launch) (2015 - Twisted Colossus)
SFNJ - Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth (Giant Pendulum) (2006 - El Toro)
SFGAm - Maxx Force (S&S Air Launch) (2014 - Goliath)
SFoT - Lone Star Revolution (Larson Looper) 2011 - New Texas Giant)
SFoG - Pandemonium (Giant Pendulum) (2018 - Twisted Cyclone)
SFNE - DC Cyborg (Flat Ride) (2015 - Wicked Cyclone)
SFFT - The Joker Wild Card (Giant Pendulum) (2018 - WWGLC)
SFDK - Batman The Ride (S&S Free Spin) (2016 - The Joker)
SFDL - Sky Screamer (Sky Tower) (1999 - Ride Of Steel)
SFA - Firebird (Skywarp) (2000 - S:ROS)
SFSTL - Supergirl (Zamperla Endeavour) (2008 - American Thunder)
*SFGE - Bucket Blasters (Water Ride) (1994 - Comet)

2 coasters, one a family ride like Stunt coaster, one a glorified Tempesto with a back end. Sigh...

Cringe is the word many are using in the comments. One person called them Six Flags Cringe, and I agree.

Honestly, It's boarder line as to whether West Coast Racers will make my bucket list.

Cedar Fair (2019)- Waiting for more announcements.
Cedar Point - Forbidden Frontier on Adventure Island (???) (2018 - Steel Vengeance)
Carowinds - (2015 - Fury325)
Kings Island - Antique Cars (2017 - Mystic Timbers)
Kings Dominion - (2018 - Twisted Timbers)
Dorney Park - (2005 - Hydra The Revenge)
California's Great America - (2018 - Railblazer)
Knotts Berry Farm - (2018 - Hangtime)
Worlds of Fun - Boathouse Grill (WoF announced a Restaurant) (2009 - Prowler)
Valley Fair - (2007 - Renegade)
Michigan's Adventure - A Park Bench (1998 - Shivering Timbers)

SFGAm - Maxx Force (S&S Air Launch) (2014 - Goliath)

SFDL - Sky Screamer (Star Flyer) (1999 - Ride Of Steel)
SFA - Firebird (B&M Floorless Conversion) (2000 - S:ROS)
SFSTL - Supergirl (Zamperla Endeavour) (2008 - American Thunder)
*SFGE - Bucket Blasters (Water Ride) (1994 - Comet)

Two new coasters, a conversion of Apocalypse at SFA to Floorless.

We could go down the list again and make comments for each park.

SFMM - West Coast Racers. Good family thrill coaster.
SFNJ - Wonder Woman Lasso of Truth. Good flat ride.
SFGAm - Maxx Force. Meh, Short ride but a new coaster.
SFoT - Lone Star Revolution. You got crapped on this year.
SFoG - Pandemonium. Good flat ride.
SFNE - DC Cyborg. Meh, it's a carnival flat ride in a box.
SFFT - The Joker Wild Card. Good flat ride.
SFDK - Batman The Ride. Another one of these S&S free spins?
SFDL - Sky Screamer. Good choice.
SFA - Firebird Meh. Tear it down and start over.
SFSTL - Supergirl. Good Choice, but no new coasters in a while.
*SFGE - Bucket Blasters. Meh, what do we expect?

Every year it's been the same. A couple parks get a coaster, and the rest get flat rides. At least they are better with the pendulum rides, but the rest are just carnival stuff.

Not to be outdone by SF.

Carowinds - Copperhead Strike

I hate heartline rolls out of the station at slow speed (Hydra). The cut back or wave turn looks cool.

This thing looks better than both SF coasters.

While that would definitely be cool, I don’t have an issue with F&F being what it is. F&F was put in at USF the way it was because it was already mostly designed already for the tram tour at USH and could be duplicated for USF. If that didn’t already exist at USH, then maybe a coaster could’ve been built for F&F for USF. I think F&F: Superchared is a neat ride, and I have ridden it a few times and enjoy it more each time. However, I think UO, after F&F, knows it needs to lay off the screen rides and are thankfully putting in a new coaster in DC’s spot for next year (which is so far unannounced, but construction on the new coaster is easily seen from the queue to the Hogwarts Express).
